Studio portrait of Lieutenant Norman Farquhar Macrae, 28th Battalion from Katanning, Western Australia. A 38 year old grazier serving as a Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) in the 25th Light Horse Militia prior to joining the AIF, he was appointed a 2nd Lt on 23 April 1915 and promoted to Lieutenant on 16 May. He embarked for overseas service with D Company from Fremantle, Western Australia aboard HMAT Ascanius (A11) on 9 June 1915. After disembarking in Egypt, he proceeded to Gallipoli on 4 September and was made Temporary Captain on 14 November 1915 before being promoted to Captain on 1 March 1916. He proceeded to France with his battalion later in March and was killed in action at Pozieres on 29 July 1916. Captain Macrae is commemorated on the Australian National Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux, France with others who have no known grave.
