Studio portrait of 1550 Corporal (Cpl) [later Second Lieutenant] Elwin Bruce Olifent, 27th Battalion, of Henley Beach, SA. A 28 year old clerk prior to enlisting on 25 February 1915, he embarked as a Corporal (service number 1550) with the 1st Reinforcements from Adelaide aboard HMAT Geelong (A2) on 31 May 1915. He served at Gallipoli where he was promoted to Sergeant on 30 September 1915. In France, on 16 August 1916, he was promoted to Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt). 2nd Lt Olifent was killed in action near Montauban, France on 5 November 1916 and is commemorated on the Villers Bretonneux Memorial, France. This image has been altered to acknowledge his rank of Second Lieutenant at time of death.
