Description

Collection relating the 5th Australian Division, AIF, France, 1918.

Collection consists of one signal message, now faded to illegibility, to the 2nd Australian Division Headquarters from 17th Armoured Cars, repeated by the 5th Australian Division Headquarters, indicating the penetration on the Villers-Bretonneux Framerville Sector dated 8 August, 8.15pm.

The message reads:

"Following from 17th Armoured Cars timed 1.10 p.m. Our infantry are on the third objectives. If they wished they could go further all is clear our artillery nil enemy infantry surrendering very freely have sent scores back and killed scores others running away. Enemy artillery nil. Have toured round Framerville and have upset all the transport etc. AUSTRALIAN flag hoisted at 11.15 a.m. on German Corps headquarters Framerville."
