Collection relating to service of 2619 Sergeant William Patrick Cosgrave, 55 Battalion, France, 1915-1918. Collection includes extracts and copies of letters written home to family in Australia; copies of Red Cross statements concerning the death in action of Cosgrave, and copies of concert programmes from the "Euripdes". History / Summary

Biographical note: Sergeant, 55th Bn, AIF. 2619 Sergeant William Patrick Cosgrave, 55 Battalion, killed in action 17 April 1918 at Villers-Bretonneux. Grocer of Redfern and South Kensington, NSW. Born Fitzroy VIC, educated Cleveland Street School Sydney, member of the Randwick Band, played club cricket, was in junior football team and served in the Senior Cadetsand Citizen Forces (26 Regiment), enlisted AIF 25 July 1915; joined 55 Battalion in Egypt, early 1916; landed in France, July 1916; took part in the Battle of Fromelles, and was with his battalion (according to his father) in every other engagement until his death. Age at death 23 years 10 months. A younger brother 13867 Philip Cameron Cosgrave, 14 Field Ambulance, was wounded September 1917 in Battle of Menin Road, and survived the war. (AWM93 0012/0011/0567)
