Cosson, John George (Lieutenant, b.1866 - d.1916)
Collection relating to service of 2454 Lieutenant John George Cosson DCM, 16 Battalion and 48 Battalion. Collection includes handwritten transcripts of extracts from part of a diary written by Cosson while on Gallipoli prior to the evacuation, December 1915. During this time he was awarded a Distinguished Conduct Medal. Cosson was killed in action at Pozieres on 7 August 1916. Copies made 1928 by Mrs Elizabeth Cosson in response to a request made by the Australian War Memorial. Location of originals unknown.
Biographical note: Lieutenant, DCM, 16th Battalion & 48 Battalion; killed in action, Pozieres, 7 August 1916. Commission agent (tobacconist) of East Fremantle, WA; born Barnes, England; came to Australia aged 8; educated at a state school; enlisted AIF 12 May 1915, posted to 16 Battalion; wounded 8 August 1915 ANZAC (Lone Pine?); won DCM while with 16 Battalion; transferred to 48 Battalion (probably in Egypt, early 1916); age at time of death 50 years.
