Elliott, George Stephenson MC(Captain, b.1885 - d.1917)
Collection relating to service of Captain George Stephenson Elliott MC, Australian Army Medical Corps attached to 56 Battalion, France 1916. Collection consists of a photocopy of letter from George Elliott to "Stokes", dated 13 November 1916, from France. The letter mentions mutual friends and comments on the work of the bearers and the Australian Army Medical Corps.
Biographical note: Surgeon-Captain George Stephenson MC, Australian Army Medical Corps (attached 56 Battalion), killed in action on 25 September 1917 at Polygon Wood, was awarded Military Cross for gallant devotion to wounded under heavy shellfire; was also mentioned in despatches for fine work done at Bullecourt. He was the youngest son of late Thomas Elliott, of Ballarat. Educated at Ballarat College and Melbourne University, and took a leading part in sport with Ormond and University. His brother, Brigadier-General H. E. Elliott, DCM, DSO, CMG, survived the war.
