Alabaster, William (Sergeant, b.1891 - d.1918)
Collection relating to the First World War service of 1059 Sergeant William Alabaster, MM, 45 Battalion, Gallipoli and France, 1915-1916. Collection consists of letters describing landing at shelter at Gallipoli; and defending the front line in France. Sgt Alabaster was awarded the Military Medal on 23rd June 1917 for previously organising and repeatedly leading parties of men over open country during intense bombardment in order to supply the front lines with munitions. He died on 5 April 1918 from wounds received at Doullens.
Biographical note: 1059 Sergeant William Alabaster, MM, 45 Battalion, Australian Infantry. Died of wounds, Doullens, France, 5 April 1918. Age 27. Son of Elizabeth and the late Edwin Richard Alabaster. Native of Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, England.
