Allan, John Richard (Corporal, b.? - d.1918)
Collection relating to the service of 3755 Corporal John Richard Allan DCM, 19 Battalion, France, 1915-1918. Collection includes photocopies of letters to parents and a photocopy of a diary written whilst on active service in France, 1916-1917. Letters describe Allan's training as a signaller and later transfer to gunner and his successive frontline activities and woundings after his arrival in France. Photocopies made by Memorial 1928. Location of originals unknown.
Throughout the letters and diary Allan comments on effective military leadership and notes the changes to warfare over the period including the introduction of tanks and the increase in gas attacks.
Biographical note: 3755 Corporal John Richard Allan, DCM, 19 Battalion, Australian Infantry. Died of wounds, France, 3 Oct 1918. Age 41. Son of Emily and the late George Allan. Native of Manning River, New South Wales.
