Collection relating to the service of 5423 Private Foster Hunter, 2 Field Ambulance AAMC, France, Belgium, 1915-1917. Collection consists of typewritten copies of three letters written by Private Foster Hunter to his mother in England. Location of original letters unknown.

History / Summary

This collection reveals Private Foster Hunter to have been an extremely pious and devout Christian who, although exempt from military service, chose to enlist. He appears to have become disillusioned with the military hierarchy during the course of his service.

Biographical note: Served in the 2nd Field Ambulance, AIF. 5423 Private Foster Hunter, 2 Field Ambulance, AIF, Wesleyan Minster of Melbourne, Victoria; born Whitehaven, Cumberland, England, educated at St. Nicholas's School, Whitehaven; worked in the coal mines; came to Australia when 22 years old; joined the AIF on 8 August 1915; died on 27 September 1917 of wounds received in the Third Battle of Ypres; age at time of death, 27.
