Collection relating to the service of Lieutenant William David Hunter, Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF), RAN, New Britain, 1914. Collection includes a letter from Hunter to his wife in Australia which contains a detailed description of actions of AN&MEF on 11 September 1914, at Herbertshohe, New Britain.

History / Summary

Biographical note: Lieutenant William David Hunter, RAN, born Melbourne, Victoria, 1 December 1887; joined the RAN on 19 December 1911 from the British Navy, as a Yeoman of Signals; 1 January 1913 - promoted signal boatswain; 1 January 1918 - mate; 1 July 1919 - Lieutenant; at the outbreak of war went to New Guinea with the AN&MEF. In 1916 went to England to join one of the Australian warships.
