Barber, Wilfred William (Private, b.? - d.1917)
Collection relating to service of 1938A Private Wilfred William Barber, 36 Battalion, France 1917. Collection includes letters written from France to Barber's family.
Barber had served in 6 Light Trench Mortar Battery, 63 Battalion and 36 Battalion. Letter on file AWM93 0012/0011/1896 from W. Barber, University of Sydney, 18 June 1929, relates the consideration Barber's parents gave to the request from the Memorial for Barber's letters. Letter also relates the incident which led to Barber volunteering for the Light Trench Mortar Battery. The Memorial returned most of the letters to the family but retained three as they displayed his "character and...spirit".
Biographical note: 1938A Private Wilfred William Barber, 36 Battalion, Australian Infantry. Died of wounds, Poperinghe area, Belgium, 23 October 1917. Age 24. Son of William and Eliza Ann Barber, of University of Sydney, New South Wales.
