Collection relating to the service of 1972A Lance Corporal Herbert Hurtle Morphett, 51 Battalion, Gallipoli, Egypt, France, 1915-1918. Collection consists of: a diary kept by Lance Corporal Morphett, between 1915 and January 1918, (short entries only, little detail); two letters from Lance Corporal Morphett to his mother; a letter from Elsie H Millet of West Guilford [WA], to Miss Stella Morphett; two studio portraits of Miss Stella Morphett (sister of Lance Corporal Herbert Hurtle Morphett); four British railway tickets.

History / Summary

Biographical note: 1972A Lance Corporal Herbert Hurtle Morphett, 51 Battalion, who on 25 April 1918 was killed in action at Villers Bretonneux. Other biographical details concerning him are: farmer, of Bruce Rock, Western Australia; born Peterborough, South Australia; educated at Subiaco (WA) State School; served in the senior cadets, CMF; was a clerk in the Subiaco Municipal Council for a time; enlisted in the AIF on 23 June 1915; served in Gallipoli, Egypt and France. Age at time of death 21 years 5 months. Son of Albert Ernest and Edith Morphett, of Kumminin, Bruce Rock, Western Australia. Born at Peterborough, South Australia.
