Youdale, Alfred Clarence (Captain, b.1888 - d.1917)
Collection relating to the First World War service of 971 Captain Alfred Clarence Youdale, 7th Light Horse Regiment and Royal Flying Corps, Australia, Egypt, Gallipoli, France, United Kingdom, and Belgium, 1915-1918.
Collection consists of a typescript copy of AWM2017.1253.1 up to 1918 but does not contain the additional newspaper clippings or original letters that are present in AWM2017.1253.1.
The letters written to his family during 1915-1918, provide a detailed narrative of Youdale's enlistment, training in Australia, embarkation and voyage to Egypt, service on Gallipoli including a description of the Battle of Lone Pine, being invalided back to Australia, joining the Royal Flying Corps, training, service in France including aerial photography and bombing missions, the award of two bars to his Military Cross, and later letters of condolence.
Captain Youdale was awarded the Military Cross with two bars, for great bravery and distinguished service. He was killed in action on 23 December 1917.
