401657 Flight Sergeant Cecil Salisbury Norman was born in Adelaide in 1916 and enlisted in the RAAF on 28 March 1941. He served as a pilot in 75 Squadron, RAAF flying Kittyhawks. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal in February 1944, and was the only Australian fighter pilot in the Pacific Theatre to receive this decoration. The citation reads: 'Since being posted to No. 75 I/F [intercept/fighter] Squadron on the 8th September, 1942, Flight Sergeant NORMAN has completed 171 hours of operational flying and taken part in 96 sorties including 17 strikes. As a flight commander he has, with the utmost courage and coolness, led his flight against well defended enemy targets, particularly during operations at Goodenough and Nadzab between October 1943 and February 1944, when his fearless and capable leadership was an inspiration to the other pilots of his flight. Flight Sergeant NORMAN has at all times displayed outstanding courage, determination and devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy'.
