Description

Circular, brass and aluminium twelve hour nautical clock. The bevelled glass face is hinged and opens to allow access to the clock dial for adjustment or winding. The markings, numbers and details are etched into the brass clock dial and are painted black for contrast. The brass body of the clock is chrome plated with the circular back plate in aluminium. The minute and hour hands are painted non original white, with the second sweep hand in red. The original internal components are missing and have been replaced with a modern battery operated mechanism made in Germany. Arranged around the outside are three counter sunk securing points allowing fixture to a wall or bulkhead.

History / Summary

This nautical clock, reputedly from a Japanese submarine, was collected by 245216 Lance Corporal Harold Vaughan Dunkley whilst serving in Japan with the Headquarters of the British Commonwealth Occupation Force (BCOF). Dunkley was born at Ashfield in New South Wales on 18 January 1912. He enlisted with the AIF on 5 January 1942 and his service number was NX82216. After the Second World War, Dunkely became a member of BCOF Headquarters and remained in Japan until 8 September 1948.
