Description
A recruitment poster issued by the Queensland Recruiting Committee. Using the stylistic language of illustration seen in "Boy's Own" magazine that was popular at the time, the poster depicts an injured soldier standing in front of an artillery gun, holding a blood-soaked bayonet and appealing to the viewer to enlist. As Australia did not have a conscripted military, a variety of methods were used in First World War posters to attract volunteers to the services. This design calls on the gentlemanly notion of fair play to gain young recruits.
