Senator Gareth Evans (centre, in white shirt) is interviewed by members of the Australian and international media at the Australian Force Communications Unit (FCU) base at Battambang during his visit to Cambodia on 22 - 23 January 1993. Australia's Ambassador to Cambodia, John Scott Holloway, in the white hat, stands to Evan's rear. In the background are a number of UN trucks and a row of collapsible temporary barracks made from synthetic material. The main purpose of Evans' visit was to meet with senior United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC) officials and Cambodian political leaders to gauge UNTAC's progress towards the cantonment and demobilisation of all Cambodian military forces before the May 1993 elections. Evans was awarded the ANZAC Peace Prize in 1994 in recognition of his work for Cambodia and recalls the Australian FCU team as being "tremendously impressive: alert, capable, resourceful, and with really good relationships with the local people."
