A member of the State of Cambodia's (SOC) military police covers a fellow member with a M-16 rifle while a vehicle search is conducted as part of a checkpoint exercise at the Military Training Centre situated at a former refugee reception camp on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. To ensure safety, the soldier has removed the magazine from his rifle. To his right in the white shirt is Heng Bean, the course interpreter, behind him is the course instructor and there are a number of students watching the exercise in the background. The 18 day courses were designed to give common training to the military police of Cambodia's newly combined armed forces, with thirty lessons in arrest procedure, police restraint techniques, crowd control, crime scene protection, humanitarian considerations, report writing and instructional techniques provided by an Australian, French, Malaysian and Canadian team of ten, all members of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC). Students were chosen to become future instructors at the School and over 2000 were processed.
