Description

Khaki woollen service dress tunic with a stand and fall collar. The collar is secured by a ferrous hook and eye, and has oxidised brass Rising Sun (general service) badges at the front collar edges secured with ferrous split pins. The khaki shoulder straps are fastened to the tunic with a small brown pressed leather button and each has a voided curved 'AUSTRALIA' shoulder title, secured by a brass split pin. The front of the tunic has four patch pockets with pointed flaps. The pair of patch pockets on the breast is box pleated and the larger lower pockets are attached to the waistband and have expanding sides. All the pockets have small leather buttons to secure the flaps. The wide integral waistband has been finished without a buckle. The tunic is fastened with five large pressed leather buttons. The front and shoulder buttons have been fastened to the tunic with a ferrous ring. Sewn onto both shoulders is the diamond-shaped white over red colour patch of 24th Battalion AIF. Sewn onto the right sleeve above the narrow straight cuff is an overseas service chevron with four blue embroidered stripes. Above the left sleeve cuff is an embroidered gold Russia braid wound stripe on khaki cloth backing. A 60mm wide box pleat runs down the centre of the back of the jacket which gathers into the belt. A cotton twill patch pocket for a shell dressing has been sewn onto the inside right front. The tunic is not lined. A checker's mark '13(?) / W^D / P', is stamped on white cotton fabric reinforcing above the dressing pocket. 'H. YEEND' has been hand-written on the white plain weave cotton reinforcing on the inside left front.

History / Summary

This tunic was worn by 3671 Corporal Herbert John Yeend, who served with the 23rd and 24th Battalions, AIF. Yeend was born at South Yarra, Victoria, in December 1888, and was employed as a clerk before enlisting in the AIF on 20 July 1915. He embarked from Melbourne with the 8th Reinforcements to the 23th Battalion on 5 January 1916 aboard HMAT A19 Afric. On 29 July 1916, Yeend was severely wounded in the back and both arms during the assault on the Pozieres Heights, and was evacuated to England, where he was hospitalised until January 1917. After further convalescence and training he was transferred to the 24th Battalion and was taken on strength with B Company of the battalion in October 1917. Yeend served with the unit for the remainder of the war. In 1918 he took part in campaigns at Hamel, Amiens, Mont St Quentin, Beauvoir and Montbrehain. In January 1919 he was made an acting quartermaster sergeant. He returned to Australia in May 1919. The rank insignia, which would originally have been worn on the right sleeve of this tunic, is no longer present. Herbert Yeend died at Canberra, ACT, on 22 August 1956.
