Wearne, Albert Ernest MC (Major, b.1871 - d.1954)
Papers of Major Albert Ernest Wearne spanning the years 1893-1938. Major Wearne joined the Mounted Rifles of Liverpool (NSW) around 1893, and later served with the NSW Mounted Rifles in the South African War. Between 1902 and 1915, he worked for the Melbourne Herald, the Evening Post and Reuters in South Africa, Japan and China. In mid 1915 he joined the 8th Light Horse Regiment with the rank of Captain and served in the Middle East. Two letters from this period describe the Battle of Magdhaba (December 1916) and the Second Battle of Gaza (April 1917) in which he was wounded. After recovering from his wounds, Major Wearne resumed his work for Reuters in China in 1918. The collection includes newspaper cuttings, certificates, business and personal letters, professional references. Some papers in Chinese language.
