Description
Old German trenches near Madame Wood, the site where Lieutenant Lawrence (Laurence) Dominic McCarthy demonstrated conspicuous gallantry for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross (VC). On 23 August 1918, two companies of the 16th Battalion attacked this intricate maze of trenches which, prior to the German occupation, had been used by the French. It was held mainly by machine gun posts, which were covering the retreat of the main body of German troops. Debris can be seen in the foreground.
