Join the ATS
A British recruitment poster encouraging women to join the Auxiliary Territorial Service, depicting a stylised portrait of a woman in profile, wearing an ATS forage cap. This was one of three designs Games produced for the ATS in August 1941. This one was dubbed the 'blonde bombshell' and was criticised by the House of Commons for its overt glamour and reference to potential sexual freedoms for a more liberated female wartime population. It was deemed unsuitable and withdrawn from circulation. Games' second poster design (April 1942) was also criticised, although this time his design was too 'Soviet'; despite the Russian woman's austere appearance being held up as the iconic image for the British working woman. The third and final design was issued in January 1944 and portrayed a more middle-class English 'Rose'.
