Description

"The front and side of a Mark IV Tank, photographed at Villers-Bretonneux, in France, on June 28th, 1919" (Official caption). This view actually depicts a Mark V* Male tank located at a tank park outside the village of Villers-Bretonneux. The Mark V* was a ‘stretched’ and mechanically improved version of the Mk IV tank and saw combat in the last months of the First World War. The tank is marked with the numbers '9543' and '037' on its front and side. This tank took part in the Battle of Amiens on 8 August 1918, serving in B Company, 15th Battalion, under Lt RP Foster. An image showing the back of this tank is held at E02425.
