Description
Former Australian and British POWs mingle with USS Queenfish (SS-393) crew on their arrival at Saipan. Eleven soldiers and one sailor recovered by USS Queenfish were later repatriated to Australia in October that year. British and Australian prisoners of war were onboard the Japanese transports Rakuyo Maru and the Kachidoki Maru when they were respectively torpedoed and sunk by USN submarines USS Sealion (SS-315) and USS Pampanito (SS-383) respectively on 12 September 1944. Several other USN submarines also joined in the search for survivors rescuing other groups of allied personnel after the sinkings.
