Armstrong, George Eric (Trooper, b.1918 - d.1985)
Description
Letters, personal papers, and photographs of Trooper George Eric Armstrong who served in 2/20 Battalion and was a Japanese Prisoner of War during the Second World War. Tpr Armstrong was also in possession of a book of poems written by NX51966 Private Frederick Owen Bayliss (who died of illness as POW in Japan on 20 January 1944) and kept these poems until his own death in 1985. The book of poems, handwritten by Pte Bayliss, also includes poetry by NX45443 Warrant Officer 1 William John Steinbeck 2/20 Battalion, a fellow POW, who died on 15 July 1945.
