Studio portrait of 264491 Squadron Leader (Sqn Ldr) Andrew King Cowper, RAAF, Administrative and Special Duties Branch, in his Second World War uniform. Sqn Ldr Cowper also served with 24 Squadron, RFC, during the First World War. He rose to the rank of captain and was awarded the Military Cross, 1st Bar and 2nd Bar for aerial engagements in which he accounted for many enemy aircraft by himself and with assistance from his comrades. He flew many ground attack sorties and caused 'great havoc and confusion' among German troops. Although his aircraft was repeatedly hit by enemy fire, he escaped injury. See also P03709.001.
