Description
Miniature yard broom with coconut fibre bristles and a wooden head. There is a hole in the head to take a handle. Head is made in five pieces and is secured by fine steel pins and staples. Marked in pencil on the head '"Search & Sweep" CHANGI BROOM FACTORY "UBIQUE BRAND" No 8866'.
History / Summary
This box of miniature brooms was presented to the Australian commanding officer in Changi, Lieutenant Colonel F G 'Black Jack' Galleghan. Prisoners who were members of the Royal Australian Artilley were responsible for the Changi Broom Factory, and the 'Ubique' brand name reflects the Artillery motto. The factory began production on 1 April 1942.
