Description

Silver and blue enamel Female Relatives badge with four bars. The badge is marked on the reverse 'STOKES & SONS MELB STG. SIL.' in raised letters and is impressed with the number '111967'. The bars (from top to bottom) are impressed with the numbers '99723', '99721', '99722' and '50657'.

History / Summary

The Female Relatives Badge was issued to the wife and/or mother, or to the nearest female relative of, soldiers, nurses and masseurs who had left Australia for active service abroad. A bar was suspended below the badge was issued for each additional son/daughter serving. This badge was the property of Mrs Eleonora Mary Eedy (nee Hallowes) of Botany, NSW, and recognises the service of her husband and four sons. Mrs Eedy's husband, 2249 Private William Ferrier Eedy served with 2 Remount Unit. Her sons were 1732 Gunner Peter Ferrier Eedy, 3 Army Brigade Australian Field Artillery; 3316 Lance Corporal George William Eedy, 14 Australian Infantry Battalion; 1540 Gunner Ronald Frederick Eedy, 3 Australian Field Artillery Brigade - killed in action at Passchendaele on 22 October 1917; and 3403 Private Neil Arthur (Matthew) Eedy, Australian Army Medical Corps.
