Description
Studio portrait of 2528 Corporal (Cpl) John Joseph (Jack) Fahey 47th Battalion (47th Bn) of Charleville, QLD. Cpl Fahey, aged 21, enlisted on 27 April 1916 and embarked from Brisbane on 19 September 1916 on board HMAT Seang Choon. Cpl Fahey was killed in action on 27 March 1918, in Dernacourt, a village on the River Ancre in France. The 47th Bn, along with the other units of the 12th Brigade and the 13th Brigade held the initial positions around Dernacourt on 27 March 1918, and the next day the Germans launched their first attack on the Australian positions. This was followed by a month of German attacks and Australian counter attacks with both sides suffering large numbers of casualties.
