Description
A river winding through a snow covered Japanese landscape, with several houses, pine trees and mountains. It was painted by Lieutenant Colonel Murayama, the Commanding Officer of surrendered Japanese Forces in March 1946, in Rabaul, New Guinea. Murayama was also the Staff Officer, 17th Division, from 1944-45, during the Eastern New Britain Campaign. The work was a gift to Major E V Smythe, who served with Military Administration in New Guinea from 1945-47, supervising the repatriation of Japanese, Korean and Taiwanese POWs.
