Description

The Belgian coast between Ostende (now Oostende) and Nieuport (Nieuwpoort). Among the buildings on the horizon are a hotel, two churches and a cathedral at Oostende. On the left in the middle distance ia a jetty at Nieuport Bains. A planned advance in the coastal sector during the British offensive in Flanders was foiled when the Germans attacked on 10 July 1917. Some members of the 2nd Australian Tunnelling Company, who had been successfully tunnelling through the sand dunes towards the German trenches, were captured in the tunnels; a few escaped across the Yser River to Nieuport. This is the first image in a five part panorama. See EZ0174P for the combined image.
