Description
Part of the northern French town of Armentieres and surrounding farmland. The roofs of some of the buildings are clearly damaged by shelling, as are the trees beyond. While only a mile and a half from the front line, Armentieres was spared heavy shelling; the British wished to protect the nearby city of Lille, so the sector was relatively quiet. The first Western Front battle involving Australian troops took place at Fromelles to the south on 19 July 1916. This is the sixth image in a seven part panorama. See EZ0175P for the combined image.
