Description
The northern French town of Armentieres and its surroundings. Note the shell damage to many of the buildings, particularly the roofs. While only a mile and a half from the front line, Armentieres was spared heavy shelling; the British wished to protect the nearby city of Lille, so the sector was relatively quiet. The first Western Front battle involving Australian troops took place at Fromelles to the south on 19 July 1916. This is a digitally combined composite panorama made up of seven separate images. It is only available as a digital print. The seven images are also available separately at EZ0175A, EZ0175B, EZ0175C, EZ0175D, EZ0175E, EZ0175F and EZ0175G.
