Description

Anzacs Special Furlough pass Number 152 from Silverton Tramway Company dated 1918/19 and allowing free travel to a returned soldier. The cover of the pass is made from cotton reinforced cardboard and the front shows the Silverton Railway Company Limited circular logo with the company name written in full around the outside circle and the company initials written within it. The reverse side has the words 'FREE PASS' stamped within the border. The writing on the inside of the pass is vertically aligned. The top half shows the company name and 'ANZAC SPECIAL FURLOUGH FREE PASS' with '1914' stamped in each corner of the border. Underneath this is a space for the traveller's details including name, rank and class of travel, each of which has been filled in by hand. The date '1914' is again stamped in each corner of the border. At the bottom of the pass is written 'Available for period of Furlough 1918/1919 With the Compliments and Greetings of the Directors' and underneath this is the secretary's signature.

History / Summary

Associated with the service of 8627 Bombardier Frederick Warren of 6 Field Artillery Brigade, AIF. Warren was born in 1897 and worked as a station hand until his enlistment on 17 September 1915. He sailed for Egypt on the troopship 'Persic' on 22 November 1915. Warren served with his unit on the Western Front and was awarded the Military Medal for 'conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty'. He embarked for return to Australia on 27 April 1919.
