Description
Group portrait of four artillery drivers, two of whom are eating, at their shelter during the Somme offensive. The soldier far right is 704 Driver (Dvr) Ernest Charles Barnes. The gunner on the left has two postcards or photographs propped in front of his boots, and a trench biscuit balanced on his knee. Cooking utensils and stores are lined up along the edge of the 'roof', which is covered with vegetation for camouflage purposes. (From the collection of 704 Driver Ernest Charles Barnes who served with the 1st Field Artillery Brigade, 21st Howitzer Brigade and 2nd Field Artillery Brigade. Dvr Barnes took some photographs using a home made self timer so that he could appear in the photograph.)
