Embroidered apron : Private G C Buchanan, 46 Battalion, AIF
Handmade white linen cutwork apron with a scalloped buttonhole edge. The apron is bordered by a decorative embroidered pattern in satin stitch and a series of cutwork flowers and leaves. Along the top edge are a series of pin tucks and a pair of waist ties.
The apron was purchased in Paris during early 1917 by 2463 Private George Colin Buchanan, 46 Battalion AIF, as a gift for his sister Emma. Buchanan was a 19 year old metal worker in Ballarat prior to his enlistment in 1915. He sailed in August with the 7th reinforcements to 14 Battalion, but was transferred to 46 Battalion when the AIF was restructured in early 1916. He was killed in action during 12 Brigade's attack on the OG 1 position at Bullecourt on 11 April 1917, his death being reported to the family only days after the apron had arrived.
