Description

The German lines around Albert being shelled by Australian artillery. This intense shelling was usually done in the afternoon, when guns of all calibres would open fire, and it was during one of these systematic outbursts in the first week of April that the famous leaning statue on Albert Bridge collapsed. With the earth of a chalky nature, the lines of trenches in this area showed up like white ribbons against the vivid green of the open countryside and made them a conspicuous target for the artillery.
