Description
The opening of the barrage of the battle of Hamel. As soon as the barrage opened at 3.10 a.m. the enemy sent up brilliantly coloured flares, of which only the white ones show in the photograph. For a week or more before the battle, the Australian guns had shelled the Huns with gas at exactly this hour, a plan to deceive them and make them put on their gas helmets, but this time the guns fired smoke instead of gas and the assaulting infantry at once had the Hun at a disadvantage.
