Two parallel bridges spanning the Cologne River at Peronne. The far side timber trestle bridge ...
Description
Two parallel bridges spanning the Cologne River at Peronne. The far side timber trestle bridge had a span of 54 feet, and was built to take an axle load of eight tons. The near side structure - known as a Class A Through Bridge - with a span of 60 feet was partially destroyed when the English retired through Peronne in March 1918, but was repaired by the Germans, who constructed pile bends under the 'blows' and made it available for an axle load of 17 tons. Both these bridges were charged by the enemy for demolition, but the capture of the bridge guard by Australian troops on 1 September 1918, prevented their destruction.
