The countryside around Mont St Quentin and Peronne. In the background is the railway embankment where the 53rd Battalion were dug in immediately prior to their attack in that area on 1 September 1918. They successfully held this position while under fire from Mont St Quentin. When Mont St Quentin was captured later in the day, and with the partial capture of Peronne, the way was paved for the complete capture of Peronne and a continuance of the advance the following day. Several shelters and tents are visible across the centre. Note the St Denis Sugar Factory in the background (right). This is a digitally combined composite panorama made up of two separate images. It is only available as a digital print. The two images are also available separately at E03753 and E03754.
