A view looking towards Anvil Wood from an enemy machine gun position on the Citadel Ramparts of Peronne. It shows the deadly field of enemy fire into which the 53rd Battalion came on the morning of 1 September 1918, when, attacking with great eagerness, they advanced over the hill and through Anvil Wood, driving the enemy before them.
