Description
The mangled remains of German prisoners awaiting burial by an Australian burial party. The prisoners, killed the previous morning when a German shell burst among them while being escorted to a prisoner of war cage, were captured at Villers Bretonneux on 24-25 April. This was during the night counter attack by the 13th and 15th Australian Infantry Brigades that succeeded in driving out the German forces and recapturing the town. In the background (right) members of the burial party can be seen preparing graves.
