Description

The ruins of the heavily shelled village. On the far left are wire entanglements and several graves marked with crosses. On the far right a railway line is visible. During the war Bellicourt was a fortified German stronghold and held an important position in the line of fortifications that formed the Hindenburg Line. During the fighting of 1918 Bellicourt was heavily shelled and much of the village was destroyed. The village was eventually captured on 29 September 1918 by the American 30th Division, which at the time was part of the Australian Corps under the command of Lieutenant General Sir John Monash. This panorama is one of a series taken by the Australian War Records Section. The original 10 inch x 46 inch 'Cirkut' camera nitrate negative is housed in the AWM Nitrate Store. This image is only available as a digital print.
