Whither Japan
A general release propaganda film, produced by the Australian National Film Board. It portrays the devastation at Hiroshima and some of the effects. Coverage also illustrates immediate post war problems faced by the Japanese people and allied occupation government, eg. shortage of food, black marketeering, monetary inflation etc. Japan's introduction to a democratic form of government, social reconstruction and women suffrage is shown. Throughout the film Australia's part as a component in the occupation government is illustrated in some cases, implied in others, all slanted in Australia's favour. The film shows, and states, that Japan will recover and is once again on the move, but the query is raised - where? Commentator states that the answer lies with the Allied nations who combined in the overthrow of Japan. Their policy will not merely determine the future of 73 million Japanese but will influence the destiny of 1000 million people of the Pacific.
