A RAAF newsreel produced by the Directorate of Public Relations. [Item 1] Operation Sabre Ferry. Coverage of the how the RAAF successfully carried out its greatest ferry flight since the Second World War. CAC Sabre fighters of Nos 3 and 77 Squadron RAAF were flown from bases in Australia to Butterworth, Malaysia as part of Australia's commitment to the Commonwealth Strategic Reserve. No. 3 Squadron took off from RAAF Williamtown in late October 1958 and No 77 Squadron took off from RAAF Richmond. The staging points were Townsville, Darwin, Netherlands New Guinea, Philippines and Borneo. Before departure the squadrons were inspected by the Minister for Air the Honorable F.M Osborne. At RAAF Darwin the Sabres were marshaled and inspected. The next staging point was Biak Island, Netherlands East Indies and then the Sabres flew to Guiuan Strip, south Philippines. Scenes at Guiuan shows Sabre A94-948 taxiing on the strip, Philippino military inspecting the Sabres. Refuelling Sabres from 44 gallon drums. All fuel had to be airfrieghted in by Dakota transport aircraft. US Navy Albatross seaplane. Sabres taxi to take off. Radar at Butterworth and Sabres landing at Butterworth. [Item 2] Fire fighter. Demonstration of the RAAFs new fire trucks in action on an burning Avro Lincoln. A fire truck is loaded into a C-130 Hercules cargo hull for delivery to a forward base. [Item 3] Sidewinder. Shows Sidewinder infrared heat seeking guided missle being fitted to the launch rail of a RAAF Sabre fighter. Sidewinder armed Sabre takes off. Various aerial shots of Sabre in flight. At Woomera a Sidewinder shoots down a Jindivik pilotless target drone.
