AIF in the NEI: surrender of the Japanese Army at Morotai
Morotai, September 1945. This film was taken by VX113924 Lieutenant Graham Norman Smythe 7 Australian Mechanical Spare Parts Section RAE at Morotai. Scenes include the arrival of United States lst at Bay of Pitoe. Leisure activities, sailing. Hospital ship Manunda in port. Daeo a native village of Morotai. Villagers celebrate Queen Wilhemina's birthday. Formal surrender of Japanese 2nd Army at Morotai 9 September 1945. Lieutenant Smythe's film is the only cine record of this surrender. General Blamey reads the instrument of surrender. Lieutenant General Teshima signs followed by Captain Oyama the naval envoy. Copies of the instrument of surrender were made available to all the troops at the ceremony. HMAS Kanimbla underway from Morotai. Camera used by Lieutenant Smythe was a Kodak model B f3.5 fixed focus with a portrait attachment on its front for 4 to 6 ft manually set aperture and 100ft loading. The film's titles were done in the field.
