Description

A new weapon is being used by some members of the Australian Army overseas. Also has been tested in Australia, the lightweight rifle is called the 'Armalite'. A hard hitting, high velocity weapon, it can be fired in single shots or automatic bursts. Materials used in its construction contribute to its lightness. It has a fibre-glass butt, trigger grip and hand guard. The fixed aperture rear-sight is built in to the carrying handle. It weighs less than seven pounds, fully loaded with 20 rounds.... much less than any other rifle of its class. The Armalite has two main parts - the stock and the breach-block. The weapon fires a 5.56mm bullet - much lighter than the round used by the normal Australian Infantry rifle. A telescopic sight, commonly known as the 'sniper-scope' increases the accuacy of the Armalite to 1,000 yards. Soldiers on patrol are constantly in danger of enemy ambush and their lives can depend on the efficiency of their weapons. A telescopic sniper-scope can easily be fitted to the Armalite. With this device our troops have a better chance of hitting a target at long range.
