Salvage of Japanese ships in Simpson Harbour, Rabaul
Description
Scenes of Japanese tanker and supply ship 5301 being salvaged by the Commonwealth Marine Salvage Board. The tanker, built at Kobe, Japan, in 1920, is four hundred and sixty feet in length, fifty six feet beam and a displacement of nine thousand tons. It was damaged by Allied air attacks and has been under water for about nine months. It would appear to have been used as a mother ship for ocean going submarines and may have also carried midget submarines.
