Interview with Ted Smout [12947 Corporal Edward David (Ted) Smout 3rd Sanitation Section, Australian Army Medical Corps] regarding his life and service during the First World War, including: early life in Queensland; enlisting, being trained for sanitation work, being a stretcher bearer in France; the shelling of the frontline hospital as the result of a gun emplacement too close to the hospital, response to the high number of casualties of the war; the blowing of the mines at Messines (including Hill 60) which he did not see, but felt; his attitude towards British command; being one of the first on scene when the Red Baron was shot down.
