Description

1. New Strength. The introduction of the Westland Wessex HAS.31 anti submarine helicopters, HMAS Supply (AO-195) a Tide class fleet oiler and Ton class minesweepers. The first of twenty seven Wessex helicopters arrive at HMAS Albatross, Nowra, NSW. At sea on their delivery voyage are six minesweepers and HMAS Supply. The minesweeper HMAS Curlew arrives in Sydney. The name plates for HMAS Gull, Ibis,Teal Snipe and Hawk. These six minesweeper make up the Sixteenth Mine Sweeping Squadron. 2. New Games. Fifteen warships of the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand arrive at Fremantle for Operation Games at the 1962 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, Perth, Western Australia. HMNZS Taranaki at Fremantle Harbour. RN Tiger Class cruiser in Fremantle. The Navy has a prominent roll as the ceremonial guard of honour for the Duke of Edinburgh. The navy raises the official games flag. The navy band of sixty musicians perform. Sailors serving as ushers, ticket collectors and standard bearers. Hammer thrower Lieutenant Charlie Morris and sprinter Able Seaman Mizi Karen Laksat of the RAN's Papua New Guinea Division. HMAS Leewin reception for Admiral of the fleet the Duke of Edinburgh. The ships of the fleet open to the public for inspection. The Royal Navy submarine HMS Anchorite. Roderick a four year old Aboriginal orphan is adopted temporally by HMAS Quickmatch. The Navy stages their own water sports. Whaler race for the cox of the fleet trophy then held by HMAS Anzac. Navy's role in the Festival of the Swan. RAN divers perform for the Duke of Edinburgh. 2. HMAS Melbourne and HMAS Anzac among twelve ships in the combined task force participating in the convoy escort exercise, Exercise Tucker Box. Entry into Sydney Harbour at the successful conclusion of the exercise. Naval Office, Canberra, SEATO members participating in Exercise Seascape to evaluate arrangements to safe guard shipping. Admiral Morrision the exercise deputy director is shown briefing the SEATO observers. The communications room and equipment in use.
